One of Spaced Magazine’s best discoveries to date: & SON Steakeasy, a one-year-old business that is already leaving an indelible mark on the history of Greenwich Village.

& SON sits in a 200 year old townhouse that has taken on numerous identities over the years. The building has operated as a restaurant for an entire century and boasts a captivating history.

The upstairs speakeasy, now known as “Father’s Study,” was once a genuine speakeasy during the Prohibition era. In the 1960s, when it was known as “The Lion,” a young Barbara Streisand showcased her talent in one of the back rooms and was subsequently hired for her first musical. Over the years, the townhouse has gone by various names, including Bondinis, Village, Lion (once again), and Casa Apicci. Additional tales recount that luminaries like Bob Dylan, Joan Rivers, and Truman Capote graced the venue with performances during their formative years.

Steven Kay, a restaurateur native to Greenwich Village, strolled past the covid caused closure of Casa Apicci and instantly saw the opportunity to give this beloved building a new life. Being intimately familiar with the neighborhood due to his local upbringing, he knew the hidden potential behind the unassuming front doors. A year or so later, Steven had the place up and running and this historic townhouse has taken on the form of & SON Steakeasy since.

Stepping into & SON today, you’re greeted by the Front Bar, a classic and elevated space that boasts a captivating design.

Two swing doors at the back of the bar reveal an elegant dining room, complete with rounded leather booths, an ornate glass ceiling, a grand central fireplace, six modern chandeliers, and an idyllic terrace overlooking it all.

The luxe velvet and liquor-lined speakeasy, “Father’s Study,” is accessed via a discreet, narrow staircase hidden in a closet. Inside the speakeasy, a secret bookcase wall leads to another concealed room used for private dining events or as an extension of the speakeasy during busy nights. The private dining room complements “Father’s Study” with similar furnishings but has its own unique ambiance. It offers a cozier setting with another fireplace, windows overlooking the peaceful Greenwich Village street, and a liquor wall for the perfect backdrop.

Although each venue within & SON is distinct in its design and story, the seamless integration of them all is remarkable. The transition from one room to the next leaves every newcomer in awe.

Steven and the team have created a new family within these storied walls. This bond is apparent upon entering and noticing the chemistry amongst the staff. It is evident that every team member delights in their time at & SON, and this positive energy is conveyed in the exceptional treatment of every guest. Our team observed how seriously Steven takes the concept of hospitality as he personally greeted each person upon entry and thanked every person leaving. He effortlessly accomplished this even while overseeing the bustling operations of a multi-faceted restaurant, a true talent.

& SON is dedicated to making its authentic dining experiences accessible to the New York City community, who has been a constant source of inspiration for the business. Thanks to modern culinary technology, & SON is able to provide their unparalleled upscale steakhouse experiences at reasonable prices without compromising on quality. At the core of their offerings is the astounding Prix Fixe Steak Dinner, which includes a choice of appetizer, salad, cut of steak, three sides, and a dessert, starting at around only $70.

We also noticed other curated dining experiences:

  • Mid-week Martini Dinner: On Wednesdays, Steak Frites and & SON’s “Filthiest Martini” is only $36.
  • Adult Happy Meal: This includes one of the best burgers in NYC, fries, and a “shake” (cold brew cream martini) for just $25.
  • Surf & Turf Sundays: Enjoy a Lobster Tail, Steak, Fries, and a glass of wine for $49.
  • Ninth Street $9 Happy Hour: Yes, you read that right. One of the most beautiful restaurants in NYC serves $9 drinks during happy hour.

These, along with other periodic and weekly specialties, seem to keep regulars, first-time visitors, and even the staff excited about their next visit to & SON. However, & SON doesn’t rely on these “curated dining experiences” to leave its mark on this historic New York townhouse.
