Our stay began with a Copal welcome ceremony, a ritual performed with every guest as part of the check-in process. We sat around a small table where Mayan Copal was burning. Mayan Copal is a sacred incense used in Mayan spirituality, traditionally burned for spiritual cleansing, to clear negative energy, purify and protect. It’s meant to create sacred spaces, to invite creativity, abundance, and positive loving energy. After a long day of travel, this was what our minds needed to begin our visit with peaceful and meaningful intent.

Habitas emphasizes sustainability, wellness, and community, offering guests a variety of daily activities. These range from restorative yoga and beachside breath work to mezcal tastings, live music, and more.

Though it would have been completely appropriate to do so, we weren’t inclined to dress to the nines. Rather, we came comfortably and as we were, and the food, service, and company was the main focus. From fresh seafood platters sourced from nearby waters to vibrant vegetable dishes bursting with indigenous ingredients, each dish, prepared with wood fire techniques, tells a story of tradition and innovation.



While Our Habitas’ design, activities, community, and cuisine were incredible highlights, what will resonate with us longer is the service. Habitas embodies the hospitality that inspired the very genesis of Spaced Magazine.
